Golden hour and sea temperature

Evening golden hour is our calculation for the 15th of each month of 2026: the time the sun takes to go from 6° above to 4° below the horizon (there is no official definition). The sea figure is the 1991–2020 average sea surface temperature at the open-sea point nearest the weather station (NOAA OISST).

The quietest and busiest months

In 2025, February was Tokyo's quietest month (7.3% of the year's guest nights): average high 10.9 °C, average low 2.1 °C, 56 mm of rain. December was the busiest (9.1%): average high 12.0 °C, average low 3.8 °C, 58 mm of rain. The figures do not show that the weather makes a month busier or quieter, so we do not say it does.

Similar weather, quieter: ideas for December

December was Tokyo's busiest month in 2025 (9.1% of its guest nights). These places had an average high within 2 °C and rainy days within 3 of Tokyo's in December, in a different prefecture, and December took a smaller share of its 2025 guest nights than December did of Tokyo's:

  • Tsu, Mie: average high 12.0 °C, 5.5 rainy days; December was 8.5% of Mie's year.
  • Kobe, Hyogo: average high 12.0 °C, 5.7 rainy days; December was 8.5% of Hyogo's year.
  • Hiroshima: average high 12.1 °C, 5.7 rainy days; December was 8.1% of Hiroshima's year (quieter than average).
  • Okayama: average high 11.7 °C, 5.0 rainy days; December was 8.2% of Okayama's year (quieter than average).
  • Tokushima: average high 12.5 °C, 5.4 rainy days; December was 7.8% of Tokushima's year (quieter than average).

Weather: 1991–2020 averages at each city's weather station (World Meteorological Organization normals in Europe, Japan Meteorological Agency in Japan); a rainy day has at least 1 mm of rain. “Quieter” compares a month with the rest of that place's own year. Try another month or place. All quieter alternatives to Tokyo in December.
